Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of the RV season. Campgrounds fill up fast, roads get busy, and rigs that have been sitting in storage since October get dusted off and put back to work. It’s one of the best weekends of the year, but only if you’re actually prepared for it.
The good news? Three weeks is plenty of time to get your travel trailer or RV dialed in. Work through this checklist before you hitch up, and you’ll roll into the long weekend feeling confident instead of scrambling in a campground parking lot.
✅ 1. Check Your Tires (Seriously, Do This First)
Tires that sat all winter lose pressure and can develop flat spots or sidewall cracking you won’t notice until you’re already on the highway. Check the PSI on every tire, including the spare, and do a close visual inspection for any cracking or bulging. If your tires are more than 5–6 years old, it may be time to replace them regardless of how they look.
✅ 2. Test Every System Before You Leave the Driveway
Don’t wait until you’re 200 miles from home to find out something isn’t working. Do a full systems check at home:
- Water: Run the pump, check for leaks under sinks and around the toilet
- Electrical: Test all outlets, interior lights, and exterior lighting
- Propane: Check connections and test your stove, water heater, and furnace
- Slide-outs: Cycle them in and out to make sure they’re moving smoothly
- Smoke & CO detectors: Replace batteries if you haven’t already
✅ 3. Upgrade Your Entry — Don’t Head Into a Busy Weekend With a Flimsy Lock
Memorial Day campgrounds are packed. More people, more activity, and more reason to make sure your rig is secure when you step away to the pool or the campfire. If you’re still using a standard keyed RV entry handle, this is the upgrade you’ve been putting off.
RVLock keyless entry systems replace your existing lock with a modern, PIN-based or key fob entry that actually works the way your life does. No more fishing for keys with your hands full of camp chairs. No more hiding a spare under the doormat. Just punch in your code and you’re in.
It installs in minutes, fits most travel trailers and fifth wheels, and gives you peace of mind whether you’re two sites away at the playground or hiking a trail for the afternoon.
✅ 4. Stock Up on the Right Accessories
A well-equipped rig makes the difference between a good trip and a great one. Before you load up, do a quick inventory and make sure you have:
- Leveling blocks — because perfect sites don’t exist
- A quality drinking water hose — not all hoses are created equal
- Sewer kit with gloves — just trust us
- Outdoor mat — keeps dirt outside where it belongs
- Power adapter set — campground pedestals aren’t always what you expect
While you’re at it, check out RVLock’s accessories built specifically to complement your entry system and make camp life more convenient from the moment you arrive.
✅ 5. Make a Campsite Reservation (If You Haven’t Already)
This one isn’t about your rig, but it might be the most important item on the list. Memorial Day campsites at popular parks and campgrounds book up months in advance. If you don’t have a reservation yet, start checking cancellation availability now — spots do open up. Flexibility on destination will help.
✅ 6. Do a Pre-Trip Walkthrough the Night Before
The morning of departure is not the time to discover a dead battery or a missing water pressure regulator. The night before you leave, do one final walk-around: check that all compartments are latched, your hitch connection is solid, safety chains are crossed and connected, and your brake controller is responding.
Then get a good night’s sleep — you’ve earned it.
Hit the Road with Confidence
Memorial Day weekend is one of those trips that sticks with you. Good food, good company, a cold drink at the end of a long day outdoors. A little prep work now means you get to be present for all of it instead of troubleshooting.
From all of us at RVLock — have a great season.
See you on the road!
